Online communities, apps, and forums often use abbreviations and terms that can be confusing. This glossary is here to help you navigate the conception journey and understand common acronyms and terms.
Fertility Abbreviations
Angel Baby
Many experience miscarriages or loss during a pregnancy. This term refers to a baby that has been lost during a pregnancy.
AF: Aunt Flow
Generally means your period, menstrual cycle, that time of the month.
Baby Dust
You might see this term being used a lot as a form of encouragement or wishing someone good luck with conceiving a baby.
BBT: Basal Body Temperature
Women’s basal body temperature may increase before ovulation, or if they are pregnant. Therefore, many women use this as a tracking method for ovulation or conception.
BCP: Birth Control Pills
Many women take birth control pills, a type of hormonal medicine, that prevents pregnancy or helps treat endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
BFN/BFP: Big Fat Negative/Big Fat Positive
This generally refers to the result one gets on the pregnancy test, whether it’s a positive (pregnant) or negative (not pregnant).
BOB: Baby On the Brain
A saying that describes how when trying to conceive or already pregnant, people sometimes gravitate their thinking towards anything that is infant or baby-related.
CD: Cycle Day
This refers to a specific day during your menstrual cycle.
CM or CF: Cervical Mucus or Cervical Fluid
Changes in cervical fluid is also used as a tracking method for women who are trying to get pregnant for their ovulation day.
CP: Chemical Pregnancy
This means a very early miscarriage that sometimes doesn't get detected unless you are actively tracking your cycle.
DTD: Do The Deed
The deed refers to sexual intercourse during ovulation when couples are trying to conceive.
DPO: Days Past Ovulation
For women or couples trying to get pregnant, ovulation and the days surrounding the ovulation day is an important window of opportunity to try to conceive.
EDD: Estimated Due Date
This generally means when your doctor gives you an estimated date for the arrival of your baby.
ET: Embryo Transfer
This is a procedure that is done through an IVF.
HCG: Human Chorionic Gondadotropin.
A type of hormone that’s produced during early pregnancy that helps sustain the pregnancy.
HPT: Home Pregnancy Test
A type of pregnancy test that you can take at home, usually bought at pharmacies, convenience stores, or online.
IF: Infertility
While many find solace online or in communities while trying to conceive, many also turn to fertility specialists and reproductive endocrinologists if they have infertility.
IUI: Intrauterine Insemination
A specific type of fertility treatment where sperm is directly inserted into a woman’s uterus during her ovulatory phase.
IVF: In Vitro Fertilization
A procedure and fertility treatment in which an egg and sperm is fertilized in a lab by an embryologist, then implanted into a woman’s uterus afterwards.
LMP: Last Menstrual Period
The first day of your last menstrual cycle. This helps women track their menstrual cycle more accurately and time their ovulation day.
LSC: Low Sperm Count
It’s a common cause of male infertility.
M/C: Miscarriage
Miscarriages may happen to anyone, so it’s important to take necessary precautions and advice from your physician.
MF: Male Factor Infertility
Low sperm count isn’t the only cause of male infertility. There are also several reasons like abnormal morphology, no sperm count, infections, medical conditions, etc.
Rainbow Baby
This term is for a baby who was born after a miscarriage.
O or OV: Ovulation
This is probably one of the most important days to track if you’re trying to conceive. Many women find several methods to track their cycle and ovulation day.
PG: Pregnant
Congratulations! If you see someone writing this, it means they’re pregnant.
POAS: Pee On A Stick
This generally refers to an at-home pregnancy test that has women urinating on a stick to confirm a pregnancy.
SA: Semen Analysis
A type of analysis for men before trying to conceive or after trying to conceive with some issues.
Snow Baby
This refers to a frozen embryo.
TWW/ 2WW: Two Week Wait
This refers to the window of time right after ovulation and when you’re expected to get your period. Many women find the two week wait stressful if they’re trying to conceive, since not getting your period may be an indicator or early pregnancy.
TTC: Trying To Conceive
This is probably one of the most common abbreviations you’ll see online. This refers to anyone who is trying to get pregnant or have a child.
US: Ultrasound
A procedure used commonly throughout the pregnancy journey.
This is a fun way to learn more about the fertility community, whether you're pregnant, trying to conceive (TTC), or struggling with infertility. While reading is fun, it's important to consult your doctor about any questions and be mindful of misinformation online.
